Oktoberfest is one of my favorite weekends of the year in Fredericksburg. I grew up here, and our family goes every single year. We love the music, the food, the people watching and running into half the town on Marktplatz. If you are coming this weekend, here is what you need to know, plus a few tips from a local.
2026 Dates, Hours and Location
The 2026 Fredericksburg Oktoberfest is Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4. It takes place on Marktplatz in downtown Fredericksburg, right on Main Street next to the Vereins Kirche.
- Friday: 6 p.m. to midnight
- Saturday: 10 a.m. to midnight
- Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The festival started in 1981, and proceeds benefit local art scholarships and community programs. That is one reason locals show up year after year. It is a party, and it also gives back to the town.
Tickets
Here are the 2026 admission prices posted by the festival:
- Adults: $15 for one day, $20 for two days, $25 for all three days
- Kids 7 to 12: $1, $2 or $3 for one, two or three days
- Kids under 6: free
If you plan to come more than one day, the multi-day pass is the better deal. Check the official Oktoberfest site before you go in case anything changes.
Parking and the Park and Ride
Parking is the number one question I get about Oktoberfest. Downtown fills up fast, especially Saturday. The easiest option for most visitors is the Park and Ride from the Gillespie County Fairgrounds.
- The cost is $10 per person, per day. Kids under 6 ride free.
- Shuttles leave about every 30 minutes.
- The festival notes that the Park and Ride shuttles are not handicap accessible, so plan ahead if someone in your group needs an accessible option.
If you are staying at a rental within walking distance of Main Street, leave the car where it is and walk. That is one of the best perks of staying close to downtown this weekend.
What to Expect
There is a lot packed into one city block. The festival lists five stages of live music plus strolling musicians, more than 50 beers, Texas wines and more than 60 food and beverage choices. You will also find artisan vendors and the fun traditions that make it feel like home:
- The polka contest
- The chicken dance (yes, everyone does it)
- A 42 domino tournament, which is about as Texas as it gets
- Kinder Park, with a jumping castle and games for the kids
How Our Family Does Oktoberfest
We usually go during the day, when it is easier with the kids. Kinder Park is a must for them. Then we grab a plate of German food, find a spot near a stage and settle in for a while. The adults trade off between the music and the beer tents, and we always end up chatting with friends, neighbors and clients we have not seen in a while. That is the best part of living in a small town. Oktoberfest feels like a big family reunion.
If you want a more grown-up night, Friday and Saturday evenings have a livelier crowd and the music goes until midnight.
My Tips for Oktoberfest Weekend
- Go early on Saturday. The morning is calmer, the lines are shorter and you get your pick of seats.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You will be standing, dancing and walking on and around Marktplatz.
- Dress in layers. Early October in the Hill Country can feel like summer in the afternoon and cool off after dark.
- Make dinner reservations. Main Street restaurants are busy all weekend. Book ahead if you want a sit-down meal before or after.
- Plan your ride home. Use the shuttle, walk, or have a designated driver.
- Sunday is the easy day. It closes at 6 p.m. and tends to be more relaxed, which makes it great for families.
A Note for Buyers and STR Owners
Festival weekends are a big part of life here. If you are thinking about buying a short-term rental, weekends like this one are worth understanding, because event calendars help drive demand for lodging near downtown. If you are thinking about living here full time, it is also good to know what Main Street feels like on its busiest days. I talk with my clients about both sides, and I am always happy to share what living close to the action is really like.
Prost, and enjoy the weekend. I hope to see you on Marktplatz.
