Christmas in Fredericksburg: Holiday Traditions and the Best Time to List or Buy

By Savannah Sikes, Absolute Charm Real Estate Group · September 22, 2026

Christmas in Fredericksburg is magic. I grew up here, and I still get excited when the lights go up on Marktplatz. Our family has our favorite traditions, and every year we see more visitors discover how special the holidays are here. If you are thinking about buying or selling this winter, the season also brings some real opportunities. Here is a local's guide to both.

Fredericksburg's Christmas Nights of Lights

The heart of the season is the Christmas Nights of Lights on Marktplatz. In recent years it has run nightly from late November into early January. Holiday music starts at 5 p.m., and at 6 p.m. there is a short audio presentation about the town's German heritage, carols and a countdown to light up the displays.

Two things make it feel like home:

  • The German Christmas Pyramid: A 26-foot wooden pyramid that was hand-crafted in Germany in 2009 specifically for Fredericksburg. Christmas pyramids are usually tabletop size, with levels showing scenes like angels and the manger. Ours is a giant version, and it is a must-see.
  • The Community Christmas Tree: A 30-foot tree on Marktplatz decorated with hand-crafted ornaments donated by Hill Country artisans.

The Light the Night Christmas Parade

The Light the Night Christmas Parade is another local favorite, held on an evening in early December. Main Street fills with families, lights and floats. Bundle up, bring the kids and get there early for a good spot.

The Tree Lighting at LBJ State Park

Out near Stonewall, the annual tree lighting at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site is a tradition started by President and Mrs. Johnson more than 50 years ago. It is usually held on a Sunday evening in December, with caroling, a live nativity and Santa. Afterward, there is a lamp-lit tour of the historic Sauer-Beckmann Farm, where you can see German Christmas traditions and try holiday cookies. It is one of the sweetest nights of the year.

Other Ways We Celebrate

  • Holiday shopping on Main Street with all the windows decorated.
  • Dinner downtown and a walk through the lights.
  • A New Year's Eve countdown on Marktplatz.
  • Wine tasting on a crisp winter afternoon.

The 2026 schedule is usually posted in the fall. Check the official Fredericksburg visitor calendar and the Texas Parks and Wildlife calendar for exact dates.

Is Winter a Good Time to Buy?

In my experience, yes. Here is why:

  • Serious buyers: People shopping during the holidays usually have a real reason to move, which makes for focused negotiations.
  • Less competition: Many buyers wait until spring, so you may have more room to take your time.
  • See the town at its busiest: If you are buying near Main Street or buying an STR, the holidays show you exactly what the busy season feels like.
  • Visit and shop at once: Many of my out-of-town buyers plan a holiday getaway and schedule showings the same weekend.

Is Winter a Good Time to List?

It can be. A home that is priced right and shows well can stand out when fewer homes are competing for attention. Here is how I help sellers make the most of the season:

  • Photograph before you decorate. I like listing photos that will still look fresh in February and March, so we time the photo shoot carefully.
  • Keep decor simple. A wreath and soft lights feel warm. Too much decor can make rooms look smaller.
  • Light it up. Days are shorter, so we make sure the home is bright for evening showings.
  • Be flexible. Holiday visitors may want to see homes on short notice.
  • Think about STR bookings. If you own a short-term rental, we plan showings around holiday guests.

Some sellers prefer to wait until after the new year. Others want to be on the market when holiday visitors are in town. There is no single right answer. It depends on your timeline and your home, and I am happy to talk it through.

My Favorite Part of the Season

For me, it is the feeling downtown on a cold night, with the pyramid turning, music playing and friends stopping to say hello. Fredericksburg is a small town that celebrates in a big way. If you are thinking about making it home, the holidays are a wonderful time to see why.
