One of my favorite things about living in Fredericksburg is how much there is to do within a short drive. When friends visit or we have a free Saturday as a family, these are the places we go. Here are my favorite day trips, with tips from someone who grew up here.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Where: North of town on Ranch Road 965
Enchanted Rock is a massive pink granite dome that rises 425 feet. Climbing to the top is a rite of passage around here, and the view of the Hill Country from the summit is worth every step. The park has nearly 21 miles of hiking trails, so there is more to explore than the main climb.
- Reserve ahead. Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends reserving a day pass online, especially in the busy season from September through May. The park can fill up.
- Entry: $8 for adults. Kids 12 and under are free.
- Go early. Mornings are cooler and calmer.
- Know the rules. Swimming and biking on trails are not allowed. The Summit Trail can close in wet weather.
- Stay late. Enchanted Rock is a great spot for stargazing.
Luckenbach
Where: Southeast of town, a short drive toward Stonewall
Luckenbach is a tiny place with a big story. It began as a trading post in 1849, one of the oldest settlements in Gillespie County. In 1970, Hondo Crouch and partners Guich Koock and Kathy Morgan bought the town, which was for sale, and turned it into a gathering spot for music and fun. Then in 1977, the song "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)" by Waylon Jennings, with Willie Nelson, made it famous around the world.
Today you can visit the historic General Store and Dance Hall, listen to pickers playing under the old oak trees and stay for a dance if one is on the calendar. It is casual, friendly and pure Texas.
The LBJ Ranch
Where: Near Stonewall, east of Fredericksburg
The LBJ Ranch is part of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. It is a beautiful drive through ranch land along the Pedernales River.
- Get your permit: Pick up a free driving permit and map at the LBJ State Park and Historic Site Visitor Center in Stonewall. The National Park Service lists permit hours starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.
- What you will see: The self-guided drive includes President Johnson's birthplace, the Johnson family cemetery and his first school.
- Texas White House: The Park Service lists the Texas White House complex as closed for rehabilitation. Check the NPS website for current status before you go.
- Bring your phone: The NPS app offers an audio tour of the drive.
While you are there, stop at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm at the state park to see what Hill Country farm life looked like in the early 1900s.
Wildseed Farms
Where: East of town on Highway 290
Wildseed Farms is described as the largest working wildflower farm in the country. John and Marilyn Thomas started the business in 1983 and moved it to Highway 290 near Fredericksburg in 1995. Spring is the showstopper season, when the fields are in bloom. You can shop for seeds, plants and garden decor, walk the gardens and visit the butterfly garden.
It is an easy stop on the way to or from the wineries along 290. My guide to wine country along Highway 290 has more about that corridor.
A Simple Day Trip Plan
- Morning: Climb Enchanted Rock while it is cool.
- Lunch: Head back into Fredericksburg for a bite on Main Street.
- Afternoon: Drive east to Wildseed Farms and the LBJ Ranch.
- Evening: Finish with music in Luckenbach.
And When We Want the City
When we want a bigger night out, San Antonio is our go-to. I used to have courtside Spurs season tickets and season tickets to Broadway at the Majestic Theatre, and I still love a game or a show. Then it is home to the quiet of Fredericksburg.
Why This Matters When You Buy
When my clients choose where to live, I ask what they love to do on the weekends. If hiking matters, north of town near Enchanted Rock might be a fit. If wine and wildflowers matter, the Highway 290 corridor could be perfect. Living here means all of this becomes your backyard.
