Families ask me about schools almost as often as they ask about homes. That makes sense. Where your kids learn shapes your days, your drive and your sense of community. Fredericksburg is a small town, but it gives parents real choices. Here is my local's look at the private schools in town, plus a word on our public district.
A quick note before we start. I am a REALTOR®, not a school counselor. Every school here welcomes visits, and a campus tour will tell you more than any article can. Please check each school's site for current grades, tuition and enrollment details.
Heritage School
I will be honest. Heritage is personal for me. I went to school there, and it is our family's choice. So I may be a little biased, but I think you will see why I love it.
Heritage School is a Pre-K through 12th grade classical Christian school. It opened in 1994 and sits on forty acres off Smokehouse Road. The school is nondenominational and accredited by Cognia.
- Classical curriculum: Latin study and a liberal arts approach that trains students to think, write and speak well.
- Senior thesis: Seniors write and defend a thesis as the capstone of their final year.
- Arts and athletics: Music and fine arts are part of every grade, alongside a full athletic program.
If you want a rigorous, faith-centered education with a close community feel, Heritage is worth a visit.
St. Mary's Catholic School
St. Mary's Catholic School has been teaching Fredericksburg children since 1856. It calls itself the largest and oldest private school in town, and its roots run deep here. The campus is on South Orange Street, close to the heart of downtown. It serves students from preschool through 8th grade.
Its mission is simple and lovely: to inspire a lifelong love of God and service to neighbor.
- Faith formation: Catholic faith is woven into the school day and the parish community.
- Challenge Lab and academic competition: Students can take part in the Catholic Arts and Academic Competition.
- Apaches athletics and Extended Day: Sports, fine arts electives and after-school care help busy families.
Many local families have sent several generations to St. Mary's. That kind of loyalty says a lot.
Ambleside School of Fredericksburg
Ambleside School of Fredericksburg is a Christian school serving Pre-K through 12th grade on Post Oak Road. It follows the teaching philosophy of Charlotte Mason, the English educator, through the Ambleside Schools International curriculum.
- Living books: Students read rich, well-written books instead of dry textbooks.
- Nature study: Children observe real plants, animals and the elements up close.
- Narration: Students retell what they have learned in their own words. The school also keeps a non-competitive atmosphere where children do not compete for rank or prizes.
For families who want a gentle, thoughtful approach that grows a love of learning, Ambleside is a beautiful fit.
Fredericksburg ISD
Our public district deserves a mention too. Fredericksburg ISD serves Fredericksburg, Stonewall, Luckenbach, Willow City and Albert. Its campuses include Fredericksburg Primary, Fredericksburg Elementary, Stonewall Elementary, Fredericksburg Middle School and Fredericksburg High School. Many wonderful families and teachers call FISD home, and it is a strong part of our community.
How School Choice Shapes Your Home Search
School plans can change which part of town makes the most sense for you. A few things I help buyers think through:
- Drive time: St. Mary's is right downtown. Heritage and Ambleside are a short drive from the center of town. Morning routes matter.
- Activities: Sports, arts and church events can mean several trips a day.
- Acreage or in town: Some families want land in the Hill Country. Others want to walk to Main Street. Both work well here.
Private schools do not use attendance zones, so you can live anywhere and still choose the school you love. That gives you more freedom when picking a home.
My Honest Take
Fredericksburg is blessed with good schools. Each one has its own heart and its own way of teaching. The right one is the one that fits your child and your family. Visit, ask questions and trust your gut.
